KAFKA IN THE SINK: NEW THEATRE, THE BLACK LION
by AshaKafka in the sink is a brand new black comedy drama brought to the Black Lion Salford and the Buxton Fringe Festival 2012 by Manchester based theatre company A Rebours Theatre Co. Since 2009, A Rebours Theatre Co. have been presenting edgy zeitgeist theatre to sell out audiences across Manchester and London.
Kafka in the sink is the company’s debut at the fantastic new fringe venue in Salford, Greater Manchester; The Black Lion Chapel Street. This year will also see the company perform at the Buxton Fringe festival for the first time. Written by Gavin Crippin; his last work, Cupcakes and Carousels was nominated for the North West Playwrights Best New Play Award 2011 and directed by Anna Marsland; Anna his just finished as assistant director on Lady Windermere’s Fan at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre.
What do you get when you throw some rose tinted spectacles, a gob on a stick and a man on the edge into a room full of paint brushes? 2012’s version of our “Big Society”. Kafka in the sink is a painstakingly researched look at the stark reality of the coalition’s target driven welfare state, charting the lives of a group of young individuals on the edge of the circle and the charity which binds them together.
A Rebours Theatre Co. is delighted to announce that the play has been endorsed by the YMCA Manchester, established in 1846 in the city; it is one of the oldest YMCA’s in the world, dedicated to helping young people across the North West. As Gavin explains; “The play’s basically about the struggle young people have and the structures that are supposed to be in place to help them. As a company we researched this area very heavily at the writing stage and throughout rehearsals. It’s key to be spot on with the real life situations the characters encounter in the play. If you’re going to produce a strong political piece like this, then it’s massively important to get every piece of information correct. During the research and development stage, Amy our stage manager, brought up work the YMCA and other organisations do for young people who are in similar situations to the characters in the play. So we decided to recognise this in our own small way by getting in contact with the YMCA and explaining what we were doing and how we’d like to donate. It won’t be much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s the right thing to do. So any money we make from selling programmes will go straight to the charity. So please dig deep!”

The play premieres at the Underground Venues; Paupers Pit at the Buxton Fringe as the venues opening show on the 4th July at 6pm. The company then take the show to Salford for the following 3 evenings, 5th, 6th, 7th July (7.30pm). Then it will be back to the festival for 3 more nights, 11th, 12, 13th July (various times).
