Facebook is now bigger than Google its official folks!
by AshaMove over, Google… there’s a new champ in town. Facebook has just surpassed Google.com as the most visited website in the United States for 2010, slurping up an astonishing 8.93% of all site visits between January and November. Wow.
Google.com, of course, is still in second at 7.19%, but it’s important to mention here that according to Hitwise’s data, this only refers to the main google.com domain. If you lump in properties like Gmail, Google Maps and so on, Google’s still probably the most visited domain on earth. In fact, if you lump all of Google’s properties together, they account for 9.85% of all site visits across the entire Internet.
Either way, coming in third is Yahoo Mail with 3.52%, followed by Yahoo proper at 3.30%. YouTubecomes in at fifth place at 2.65%.
While Hitwise had said as early as March that Facebook was likely to take over Google as the most popular website, this makes it official. Facebook, incidentally, was also the #1 ranked search term for the decade. #2? Facebook login, proving once again that the vast majority of people see no distinction between their browser address bar and Google.com.
